The receptionist behind the counter checked the list again. “She’s in for some routine tests,” Jan said, holding on to and peering across the cool marble counter.

“Hmm, let me check another listing. Fields, Ada.” The young woman’s pencil glided down several pages. “Here it is, oncology. Take the elevator to the ninth floor, make two rights, and sign in at the nurse’s station.”

“Oncology. Are you sure?”

We watched the receptionist’s professionalism turn into a weary compassion. She bobbed her head up and down. Jan walked toward the elevator, her mind tumbling. Cancer. Parts of articles and news broadcasts she’d hardly listened to resurfaced. Mutation of the cells, no cure, remission, tumors, malignant, chemotherapy, weakness. Jan pushed the button for the ninth floor and leaned against the back rail of the elevator. It smelled like coffee and some type of disinfectant. When the bell for the ninth floor sounded, Jan wondered how she was going to help someone who had always been the helper.

Over Jan’s shoulders, I saw Ada’s colors draw nearer to me then pull away. Knowing that the Spirit’s joys can be earth’s sorrow, I banked my fire under the day the child would come to know her name. I felt both my girls. Ada struggling for the child and so many others. The child never having considered Ada not being. Time tested. People failed. Earth folks assumed time was running out, when time can only pass from one place to another, from the place where eyes see and clocks tick to the place where years, centuries, and millenniums crisscross the ages.
